London’s Tate Modern gallery is to showcase the first “substantial survey” of contemporary artist Damien Hirst’s work in the UK. A Thousand Years (pictured) was created in 1990 and features an actual life-cycle. Maggots hatch inside a white box, turn into flies, then feed on a cow’s severed head. [M]

On the eve of his first major retrospective in the UK, Damien Hirst takes surrealist comedian and fellow artistic maverick Noel Fielding on an exclusive walk through his show at Tate Modern, providing a behind-the-scenes look at this landmark exhibition and a body of work spanning more than two decades.

The film combines Damien and Noel’s walk through the exhibition with behind-the-scenes footage showing the process of installing the exhibition, from wrangling butterflies to immersing a shark in formaldehyde. [M]

Common issues that arose form the final crit on Monday 26th March 2012.

Not enough of you have looked at contemporary design and illustration.
Europa, Julia, Wrap, Eureka, Good Magazine, Heart illustration agency, Peepshow, Drawbridge were all mentioned in the crit. There are lots more out there to look at.
Work needs to be proofread - check for spelling and grammar errors.
Body copy generally too large.
Be brave. Take creative risks.
Too reliant on the computer - look to the workshops. Be playful.
Presenting work – orientation of pages, type, image use etc need to be considered.
Print out work at actual size - you need to see your newspaper at actual size printed out and not on screen to be able to edit type
Always read the brief carefully.
Keep your journal as a blog. Those who had talked a great deal about how helpful this was.
Detailing - needs to be addressed throughout.
